Don Miguel Ruiz, author of The Four Agreements, speaks to us of ancient Toltec wisdom and challenges us to live our lives according to four maxims. He claims that doing so will transform our lives, freeing us from self-limiting beliefs and opening us up to true freedom, happiness and love.
I never seem to have a problem remembering two of them:
(1) Be impeccable with your word; and,
(2) Don't take it personally.
The first, simply, say what you mean and mean what you say. Follow through, don't lie. And the second, it's not always about you. An action on your part can evoke completely different responses from another depending on their emotional state or circumstances. Ruiz gives easily grasped examples that makes the concepts clear.
The last two:
(3) Don't make assumptions; and,
(4) Always do your best.
Once again, the beauty of Ruiz's claim is apparent. Assuming is a bit akin to taking it personally. Be willing to look at things from a fresh viewpoint. Engage in reality checks. And, finally, always show up in your life. Don't fall prey to the "good enough" syndrome. If you only want a "good enough" life I suppose that will work for you. But honestly, don't you want more?
